We just made some desks for the new offices of Erik Marinovich and Jessica Hische two dope typographic artisans that are setting up a shared shop in SF. Simple industrial hot rolled frames with wood tops complete with spots for tools of the trade. Some pencil holders, a cup for pens and a small rack for either hanging the latest design rag or a roll of vellum paper...Designed in association with Amy Campos we can't wait to see what comes out of this new creative space.....and hope to get invited to a party or two...Does this font make me look fat? We build it right, we can build it for you.

Happy New Year!...Trolling through the year of pictures and found several jobs we didn't share with you guys... the first is a nice little deck addition off a remodeled kitchen. We used aluminum grating to maintain light for the bedroom below and a cable rail to keep it looking light and airy. the railing was broken up so as to build the deck in two phases and using all the same parts... looks good and saves money and time. More to come tomorrow...With 2012 coming up.. like what seems like tomorrow, keep us in mind if you are in need.. we are here to help... and remember, if you are going to build it, build it right, with Five Twenty Two Industries....

1 1/2" square pickets all lined up like a nice little verse as we cross over to the chorus...er..I mean pool. A new job we just finished up in Ross CA, from the stellar architects over at Min | Day ... gosh Ross is a nice place... anyway...It might be a bit cold to jump in that pool right now but come summer I bet this bridge over to the pool area is going to get quite a work out. These HEAVY duty posts 3/16" wall tubes were zinc plated and then powder coated to color match the sliding doors into the family room. Need some rail? Need it to be a certain color? Want it to last? Call us.

Just captured the not so elusive 522 Firebox in the wild. We personally think it looks stunning in its natural environs. With its hidden propane tank we think it could possibly be a member of the infraclass of marsupials. Its natural hardwood latch and adjustment knob make me think it has been domesticated. Call us, we can release one into your yard as well...they make great backyard pets. Sure to be loved by all your friends, and they are great around drinks and chats.

Well at least around this stair I do...For this Oakland Remodel we built a metal stair to make sure the open plan kitchen family room remains so. Steel was the perfect choice to keeping the space open and light...and we caught them before they put in the structural beam and was able to swap out the ugly Tube steel pipe they were going to put in and sub for an I beam we had sitting around. It matches better...We did this for them...we can do this for you....Go on breathe in all that extra space.

Marcus Tullius Cicero is credited with this quote, and to make sure this room had enough soul we added a floor to ceiling bookcase in this San Francisco Victorian. We used hot rolled steel with a clear satin finish and solid oak shelving and kept it clean and simple... Of course in order to reach all those books you have to add a ladder...we did that too... need some soul? Give us a call.

Just finished a new set of stairs in San Francisco... Beautiful modern remodel with a taste of refined industrial materials. Clear finished hot rolled steel stringers with perforated sheet infill for the railing, which was also clear coated adds a refined taste of industrial chic to this San Francisco Victorian remodel. The exterior railing is anodized aluminum which matches their sliding door and will NEVER rust. The light color helps it fade into the skyline to help you catch the glint of sun off the Cathedral and golden gate bridge in the distance. Need some rails?

It's nice to have your work appreciated. It's nice to make a difference. We took direction from John Lum, you know from John Lum Architecture. He designed this beautifully simple sidewalk garden that judging from all the people who stopped by while we were installing the cor-ten boxes and by the note someone left, people in the neighborhood seem to really love it. We have changed a dull, boring, dirty, hot, sidewalk to a nice little oasis. Yes we can do it for you.

If you look close enough.. and please do, we have something for you in each picture except the bathroom..Now it's time to play "Where's 522?" Kind of like playing where's Waldo without the sweater...First pic.. can you find the dinning table we did?.. That was easy.. How about the Cor-ten house numbers and planter in the second picture? But we have just been SOOOO busy, and haven't had too much time to post stuff.... Here is a quickie. New glass railing for a really nice home on 25th St in SF. A glass railing "Wall" with wood cap. The center railing which you can't see to well here is three flights of railing all in one plane and looks pretty sexy.. I'll see if I can dig up another shot for you but for now let this simmer in your brain and try and figure out what we can do for you...

Curb Appeal

Fresh curb appeal in SF.
Our rails are built to last and last. First we use solid bar instead of tubing, tubing rusts from the inside out where there is no finish. Once the railing has been completed, it is dipped in a chemical bath to degrease it and then electroplated with a zinc finish which helps keep it from rusting. The electroplated finish holds paint unlike hot dipping galvanizing. Once the zinc finish has been put on we move the rail to another finisher who then applies a baked on painted finish or "powder coated" finish. You made the investment, we make it last.

So I am sure my client, as we quietly closed the door, shed some tears of joy. They were very patient and I think we are all pretty pleased with the way this turned out. Hot rolled uprights pierced with rectangular stainless bar and capped with Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry wood) #4 finish on the stainless that's a 180 grit for some, and a clear satin on the hot rolled. Just down right sexy stuff.....Oh we can do this for you as well...

So look who is legal.. now we can VOTE! September 1st was our 18th birthday and now we will be voting for our favorite views (interpret that as you may) The point is, You bought the view.. you should enjoy the VIEW not the railing.. well.. you should enjoy the railing as well so long as you don't sacrifice the view...This roof deck looking down on the Sea Cliff dist in SF just so happens to have quite the spectacular landmark in its purview....gosh where is an english major when you need one...The Anodized aluminum rail will NEVER rust.. it just can't! The only thing that will out last that bridge view is aluminum. They had a steel railing up here that lasted them a year... then they called us. This modular system snapped together in a breeze. You can do it yourself or you could have your contractor do it...or you could not only have us fabricate it.. we could install it as well... go on..give us a ring.

It seems to be all the rage...Hot rolled steel is naturally beautiful. It has blemishes and variations just like wood. With a clear satin finish to protect it from rust, and some simple maintenance it will last a life time. Above we covered an entire wall with sheets and used stainless fasteners to attach it to the wall. Add some shelves for "stuff" and you are set. We can cover your walls... you supply the "stuff".

Kind of like chocolate and peanut butter... if you are into that kind of thing, and don't have allergies and stuff...Wood and steel pretty much always look great together. This is the back of a house on 26th St in SF where we did some metal work for Blair Burke the contractor and LS|arc the architecture firm....The balcony is zinc plated and then powder coated bronze steel with a galvanized tight mesh grating flooring. The sexy awning is a combination of wood slats and the zinc and powder coated steel like the balcony and railing. Each slat is angled to let the sun in during the winter and keep it out during the hot summer months..super cool...oh and I think you might know the drill.. we can do something like this for YOU too.

We are just in the process of doing several prototypes and finishes for some handrail brackets you can demand for your own home or project. New railing being prepped for install tomorrow...For Joel Karr of Group 41. Four different levels of criss crossing 3/8" round bar adds depth and movement to the guard rail. Now I am not sure what the heck that has to do with this great stair case we just finished up for Architect Bruce Wright. But I am pretty sure as he walks up and down his stairs he probably hums to himself... so see, full circle. Any way I will post some more shots of the stair that we built for him soon. Single stringer with glass rail....you too should buy yourself a stair way to heaven.

Charles Doell designed the interior and brought us in to fab some pieces for Frank LeClerc's newest endeavor Gitane.... Check out the article and click on the slide show link.. the second image has a great shot of the interior and shows our bar stools and the bathroom enclosure (The glowing blue corner) We also fabricated their exterior table coral and the foot rests. Landscape Architecture Cover Model

So...looks like we made the cover of Landscape Architecture... yes yes Thank you. We did the Cor-Ten Fountain and the retaining wall here... this for the old SF Sunset Magazine Idea house. The article can be read here. Plenty of great shots inside the rag so pick up your copy now. And the fountain and retaining wall could of course be bought from your fav metal works.

***Update*** HA just read the article myself and although we are not mentioned and they have a some great shots of our work, you can get an idea of the "tension" there was on the job site...just love the gossip....now... let see what Paris Hilton is up to...

Well...New Years has already past but we can still go get some drinks and celebrate over at Gitane, where we have just finished... well...a couple months back... metal work for Cafe Claude's sister restaurant Gitane. The interior was designed by Charles "Mr. Important" Doell. I'm sure you'll being seeing it in an upcoming issue of Wallpaper* or some other fancy rag. We did several things for them from the footrest and barstools to the restroom enclosure and exterior wind screen so you can while away your time drinking and enjoying some croquettas and bacon bonbons....after all whats better than sauteed prunes stuffed with goat cheese except those wrapped in bacon.....ahhhh bacon......oh and check out those wind screens!

Just finished up working on a beautiful house out in the Richmond... on Funston Ave near Geary. Sean Whelan was the contractor and did a wonderful job updating this multifamily dwelling. John Lum was the architect... one of our favs. Anyway we were proud to do some railings in both units. Stainless round bar with hot rolled frame topped off with a red oak cap. Looks nice, feels right. Oh... and of course... you can buy the house. It comes with the rail. Hell... buy the house and we will throw the railing in for free!

Lacewood Headboard with bronze tubing make this head board glow. There's a little cubby hole for the things you need. This one is going into the Sunset Magazine's Monterey Idea house. So since it's the girls room we put some toys in it... YOU on the other hand can put whatever you want in it. Wether it be a late night snack, your specs, a clock or all the essentials for that special night with your boo.....(I'm not really sure what the hell that means but.. use your imagination.) Anyway Australain Silky Oak Wood or Lacewood is some amazing stuff wonderful detail just like your grandmothers lace under the hard candy jar. Just dropped off the table for Sunset Magazine... Should be a good show/house/tour thingy. Crazy art all over the walls...I'll check on who they got to populate the walls but I hear it some company from SF that buys at estates so they have a lot of cool retro paintings and prints all over the walls...I'll post the name of the staging co. later, as soon as I re-remember.....maybe dont use that during scrabble either.. Anyway this is our new tag. It was supposed to say "custom 2008" also.. but.. the ladies need their table...so next time... all furniture moving through get hit...signed and number...

It's just sexy....Modular bolt together railing system. Spacer connectors are counter bored so they are flush. The wire railing system has no exposed turnbuckles. Turnbuckles are for suckers. The end pieces of the wire system have internal threads to seamlessly and turnbucklelessly add tension to the wire. (you can impress your friends by using that term....just don't use it in scrabble) Just remember kids, connection details are sexy.

So... you know you wanted to check it out....wondering to yourself what it looked like all complete and stuff... Well here is the corner shot which I guess then by definition is not the full monty but just another partial shot... oh well.. check the website in a week or so and I promise we will have the full monty shot there... Oh BTW. Top and bottom aluminum horizontals, and round spacers are anodized while the uprights are hand polished and powder coated clear semi-gloss. The wood cap is solid American Red Oak and the biscuit in the corner is anodized aluminum as well...

Can they miter?

Can your current fabricator Miter? Everybody talks about wood working connections... the same can be done with steel. So why don't they? It's much easier to slop it together and grind down the weld leaving scars from the grinder on the surface of the steel and a bright spot to boot. We take the time to miter our connections and weld from underneath, leaving minimal grinding scars, and nice clean connections. It's ok to pay attention to detail... let them know and if not give us a call.

Stair and railing for the Sunset Magazine Idea house in San Francisco. The infill for the railing are rings made from drops from a local supplier. Part of the whole reuse renew and recycle thing. Treads are solid poplar, and the finish on the steel is a clear satin, with bees wax overcoat.
